"The Frog" transports us to a secluded forest town, just a few hours outside of Seoul. Here, Jeon Yeong-ha has spent the past several years, drawn by his late wife's wish to live in a serene and beautiful place surrounded by nature. After she passed away, instead of returning to the hustle and bustle of Seoul, Yeong-ha chose to stay, running a small holiday rental in the same tranquil area. Despite his daughter's constant pleas to move back to the city and live with her and her fiancé, Yeong-ha finds a strange comfort in managing the rental with the help of his close friend, Yong-chae. Yet, it's clear that Yeong-ha's heart isn't fully in the business, relying on Yong-chae to push him into promoting the property online to attract guests.
The story takes a dark turn when a mysterious young woman, Seong-a, checks into the rental with her son, Si-hyeon. From the moment she arrives, something feels off. But it isn't until the next morning, when Seong-a vanishes, leaving behind bloodstains and the pungent smell of bleach—and no sign of her son—that Yeong-ha’s unease turns into outright fear.
Intertwined with this current mystery is a chilling event from over two decades ago at the Lake View Motel, run by Gu Sang-jun and his wife, Eun-gyeong. In the early 2000s, during a slow season, Sang-jun made a fatal mistake by offering a room to a serious-looking man, later revealed to be the notorious serial killer, Hyang-cheol. What seemed like a routine guest stay turned into a nightmare when Hyang-cheol committed a gruesome murder inside the motel. Though the killer was quickly caught, the damage to the motel's reputation was beyond repair, leaving Sang-jun and his family in ruins.
